Position Overview

The successful Senior Scientist acts as a technical lead for the upstream component of client programs. The individual monitors ongoing experiments, identifies or resolves complex technical project issues, and provides technical leadership within the group. The individual takes a more active role in non-routine process development activities.

Job Description

What You'll Do

  • Independently applies scientific and/or cross-functional knowledge to achieve project goals.
  • Ensures completeness and technical quality of work to ensure the integrity of research.
  • Identification and resolution of technical project issues.
  • Responsible for one or more client projects.
  • Manages planning and scheduling logistics for their program(s).
  • Experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation of data.
  • Ensure safety procedures and cultural norms are followed.
  • Provide technical leadership for higher-level analysis involving process experimental design and data analysis.
  • Implement/start up new equipment and operational readiness activities.
  • Author SOPs and work instructions in FDA-regulated environments.
  • Provide technical guidance for deviation investigations, root cause analyses (RCAs) and CAPAs.
  • Trains and provides guidance to lower-level scientists.
  • Provides functional supervision or feedback to junior scientists and may provide performance feedback to managers.

Basic Requirements: 

  • Ph.D. and 1+ years of experience, an M.S. and 6+ years of experience, a B.S. and 10+ years of experience
  • Has proven expertise in upstream mammalian cell culture technologies and theory.
  • Advanced knowledge or SME for upstream processing, including seed train scale-up, fed-batch bioreactor operations and analytical equipment troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other associated software used in the scientific field.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to influence and collaborate in a team environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with CHO cell platforms, Ambr technology, scale-up/scale-down/scale-out, recovery operations, and media development are preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • Essential physical requirements, such as climbing ladders, standing for long periods of time, stooping, and typing.
  • Physical effort/lifting, up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • Weekend work is routine in cell culture, additionally process may require infrequent nights, or to be on-call as needed.
  • Travel requirements: This position has no travel requirements. Some travel may be offered for conferences or process transfer activities.
  • Emergency staff designations.

 

Visual Acuity:

  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small parts, small defects and/or operation of machines including inspection; using measurement devices and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Environment: primarily indoors in a laboratory or office setting.
  • Exposures encountered: may be exposed to hazardous materials, loud noise, or extreme heat/cold.
