Job Description

The Senior Director, Engineering & Facilities is the business leader for the site engineering and facilities functions. This pivotal role is responsible for overseeing the engineering functions, including Automation, Process Engineering, Utilities, Commissioning, Qualification, and Validation (CQV), Facility Management, Security, and Capital Projects. This role is a member of the site leadership team and leads the business ensuring engineering teams support the strategy, provide superior technical solutions, support robust manufacturing processes, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and uphold the highest standards of quality and compliance.

The role ensures a strong connection to FUJIFILM Biotechnologies' strategic priorities and creates close connections between the sites in the network on engineering topics to create and share best-practices.  

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements the site’s engineering strategy to align with FUJIFILM Biotechnologies strategic goals, mission and business objectives
  • Provides Engineering experience and perspective on the site leadership team.
  • Leads and mentors the engineering team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Oversees engineering activities related to all aspects of the business (process development, scale-up, technology transfer, equipment design and/or optimization, etc.), including, but not limited to:
  • Implementation and optimization of automated systems to enhance manufacturing efficiency and product quality, for new and existing equipment.
  • Establish and ensure the robust and reliable operation of utilities, including HVAC, water systems, and compressed gases, to support manufacturing processes.
  • Ensures CQV activities follow regulatory standards and maintain the highest levels of product quality and safety.
  • Oversees the maintenance and security of the facility, providing a safe and efficient environment for all employees and operations
  • Manages and executes capital projects to support infrastructure development and strategic growth initiatives.
  • Ensures engineering projects meet cost, quality, and timeline targets while complying with regulatory requirements and industry standards (e.g., cGMP, FDA, EMA). Partners with EHS Site Lead to ensure the highest standards of workplace safety and environmental compliance.
  • Negotiates and manages contracts and outside vendors to ensure engineering objectives are met with high quality, compliance and financial standards
  • Partners with cross-functional teams, including Process Development, MSAT, Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Regulatory Affairs, to support product development, commercialization and technology transfers.
  • Drives collaboration with Engineering leaders across the FUJIFILM Biotechnologies network internally as well as externally to develop and share best practices.
  • Represents the Engineering function with internal and external partners, clients, and regulatory bodies such as FDA and EMA.
  • Drives engineering innovation and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency, product quality, and safety.
  • Ensures all engineering activities, performed by FUJIFILM Biotechnologies or potential duty holders, are executed following regulatory and safety standards, company policies, and quality systems.
  • Proactively identifies and mitigates risks and ensure robust validation and compliance processes are in place.
  • Manages the site engineering budget, ensuring optimal allocation of resources, cost control, and financial performance.
  • Manages Capital Projects to ensure effective investment and infrastructure development in line with strategic goals.
  • Oversees the planning, recruitment, and development of engineering talent to support current and future business needs.
  • Manages and develops direct reports from the Engineering & Facilities team
  • Administers company policies such as time off, shift work, and inclement weather that directly impact employees
  • Completes required administrative tasks (e.g., timecard approvals, time off approvals, expense reports etc.)
  • Addresses performance gaps, employee questions and concerns, and partners with HR as needed for resolution
  • Performs other duties, as assigned

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree Engineering, preferably in Biochemical, Chemical, Mechanical, or other Engineering discipline with 15+ years of relevant experience; OR
  • Master’s degree Engineering, preferably in Biochemical, Chemical, Mechanical, or other Engineering discipline with 12+ years of relevant experience or; PhD with 10+ years of relevant experience OR
  • Associate’s degree with 17+ years of experience; OR
  • High school diploma with 19+ years of experience
  • 5+ years of team management experience8 or more years of technical and regulatory experience and understanding within a biotech or pharmaceutical background.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment that will require management of multiple competing priorities while driving all projects forward and meeting project deliverables
  • Being in a previous leadership role is preferred.
  • 10+ years of people management, leadership and/or team management experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to see the big picture and develop actionable plans that achieve long-term objectives.
  • Ability to effectively present information to others
  • Proven track record in leading and nurturing teams, effectively managing both direct and matrixed (dotted-line) relationships. Adept at influencing and engaging stakeholders at all levels of an organization.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, managing multiple priorities while driving projects to successful completion.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proven ability in project management and process improvements within the biopharmaceutical or cell therapy sectors, driving impactful change.
  • Must be flexible to support 24/7 manufacturing facility

 

You will report into the Site Head and have approximately 5-6 direct reports.
