Position Overview

The Utility Operator 3 operates, maintains, and repairs black and clean utility systems. This role is also responsible for monitoring mechanical and/or electrical equipment, power distribution, chilled water, gas, domestic and de-ionized water, WFI, clean steam, boilers, compressed air, fire alarm, security, remote building equipment monitoring, sanitary, acid waste, and storm drain systems. Additionally, this role performs daily monitoring of tank farm, supports lab admin building, building management system (BMS) and critical alarm response. This role serves as the primary contact and communicator to all alarms received in the control room.

Job Description

What You’ll Do

 

•Operates various utility systems, including compressed gases, cooling towers, plant steam, chillers, boilers, HVAC, fire alarm system, and utilities tank farm
•Monitors equipment performance, conducts routine maintenance, troubleshoots issues, and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards
•Monitors utility consumption and ensures efficient usage, such as electricity, water, steam, and gas
•Analyzes data to identify areas of improvement, to implement energy saving measures, and to optimize utility usage to minimize costs and environmental impact
•Performs routine inspections of utility equipment and systems to identify potential issues or maintenance requests
•Conducts basic and complex preventive maintenance on utility equipment, such as lubrication, filter replacement, and cleaning to ensure equipment reliability and to minimize downtime
•Responds to equipment failures and emergencies promptly to troubleshoot issues and ensures continuous operations of utility systems
•Responds to emergency conditions, such as power outages, fire alarms, and critical equipment alarms
•Operates and monitors site building management system (BMS) and Delta V
•Ensures utility systems and operations comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and other environmental regulations and standards
•Monitors and operates the site’s waste neutralization system
•Monitors and maintains compressed gas inventory
•Follows standard operating procedures (SOPs) and document incidents reported by Utility Mechanics and operators
•Maintains accurate records, conducts audits, and implements corrective actions to address non-compliance issues
•Participates in cross-department meetings, provides technical expertise, and assists colleagues with the implementation of process improvements
•Identifies and participates in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize utility operations, reduce costs, and enhance efficiencies
•Manages the inventory of spare parts and equipment
•Provides guidance and mentors operators
•Participates in the development and implementation of safety procedures
•Supports site operations and emergency work orders during off-hours, as needed
•Remains up to date on the latest technology, industry trends, and best practices
•Performs other duties, as assigned

 

 

Knowledge & Skills

 

•Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
•Knowledge of control systems
•Effective communication, both written and oral
•Strong leadership and negotiation skills
•Ability to work in a team environment
•Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodologies or other continuous improvement techniques
•Must be able to support 24/7 manufacturing facility, including shift, on-call and weekends

 

Required Skills

 

•High School Diploma/GED
•4-6 years of experience in Utility Operations or a related field
•Experience with data tracking software, such as Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)

 

Preferred Skills

•Associate degree in mechanical, electrical, applied engineering, or industrial technology
•Prior utility operations experience in a pharmaceutical manufacturing, or industrial environment
•Experience using Microsoft Office

 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • May work in Mechanical/Production spaces that may require hearing protection and enrollment in a hearing conservation program. 
  • Will work in environment operating a motor vehicle or Powered Industrial Truck.
  • May be required to operate a pallet jack
  • Ability to discern audible cues.
  • Ability to inspect or perform a task with 20/20 corrected vision, visual acuity, including distinguishing color.
  • Ability to ascend or descend ladders, scaffolding, ramps, etc.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time - up to 60 minutes
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time - up to 60 minutes
  • Ability to conduct activities using repetitive motions that include writs, hands and/or fingers.
  • Ability to operate machinery and/or power tools.
  • Ability to conduct work that includes moving objects up to 33 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, push or pull, reach to retrieve materials from 18” to 60” in height, and use twisting motions.
