The Role

 

The EH&S Engineer will be responsible for providing detailed engineering and/or technical support to assure compliance with environmental, health and safety requirements. In addition, this role will provide guidance on cost-effective measures to protect air, land and water resources to provide a clean and healthful environment. Assist with new project initiatives, including expansions, acquisitions and new development opportunities. Assist in site support for EH&S programs as needed, including PSM/RMP initiatives and support efforts to develop. Maintain and implement EH&S programs to support operating facilities and business units.

Job Description

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Provide ongoing EH&S environmental support.
  • Provide technical support of such tasks as emissions testing management, periodic reporting, permitting, training and inspection support.
  • Periodic support for other facilities may be needed as well.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with operating plant/facility staff that support a collaborative model of providing EH&S support.
  • Manage modifications, amendments and renewals of environmental licenses and permits including PSD/NSR, Title V, NPDES, stormwater, etc., in a manner that supports the business goals in a compliant and cost-effective manner.
  • Manage site hazardous waste efforts and verify compliance with hazardous waste regulations and permitting.
  • Manage and coordinate efforts for new project permitting activities; coordinate with third party engineering to provide smooth environmental permitting process.
  • Assist with planning, development and implementation of EH&S policies, programs, procedures and standards.
  • Provide analysis of existing and proposed regulations and make evaluations regarding their impact to the company; support regulatory/legislative advocacy efforts, as required, to ensure consistent and equitable application/development of environmental policies
  • Coordinate issues associated with emissions monitoring systems, including certification and commissioning of new systems and emissions testing efforts.
  • Participate in compliance assurance efforts, such as audits/compliance reviews.
  • Develop, maintain, implement and oversee environmental and safety training programs.
  • Coordinate communication and interactions with governmental agencies, including requests for information, investigations/inspections and enforcement activities.
  • Provide site support for EH&S programs and Sustainability efforts as needed to maintain compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Participate and support ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications.
  • Implement and conduct audit programs to identify existing or potential EH&S hazards and liabilities, determine corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and manage the resolution of identified issues.
  • Provide support on recurring environmental compliance obligations, including compliance recordkeeping, reporting, testing, etc.
  • Must demonstrate effective communication, working relationship development, and the ability to influence site management, front line supervision and other employees; an emphasis on cross-functional collaboration, teamwork, and the ability to motivate outside third parties.
  • Ability to cover on call schedule as production needs demand.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science, engineering or other EH&S-related technical discipline from an accredited college/university is required.
  • A minimum five (5) years of EH&S leadership experience with a focus on industrial facility manufacturing.
  • Experience in a chemicals manufacturing environment is highly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of, and experience with, major US environmental regulatory and permitting programs addressing employee safety, air quality, wastewater/stormwater discharge, waste management, hazardous chemical management, etc.
  • Experience working with independent standards organizations and certification programs such as ISO 14001, ISO 45001, etc.
  • Professional Engineering License, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or similar professional credential(s) are a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate information to a broad range of people and audiences as circumstances dictate.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical reports and regulatory documents/standards, make sound judgments, and offer effective solutions.
  • Ability to successfully manage 3rd party consultants, and work in a team environment.
  • Must be able to successfully and safely work under various conditions that are commonly experienced within a plant or field environment including (but not limited to) the following:
    • Walking/climbing ladders or stairs to access and observe plant equipment and practices
    • Entry/exit of confined or cramped spaces
    • Use of various forms of personal protective equipment, including respirators, as required
    • Noisy environments
    • Hot, cold and other inclement conditions
  • Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work well with others at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to cover on call schedule as production needs demand.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position that requires candidates to successfully pass a post-offer drug screening prior to employment. One of the essential job functions is the ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.

PAY RANGE: The pay range for this role is estimated at $88,000/yr. - $98,000/yr. with actual wage based on candidate’s qualifications and experience.
