Job Description

Summary: 

 

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will play a key role in designing innovative ultrasound transducers in a fast-paced environment. This position demands a focus on high-performance products that flawlessly meet the needs of our users. You'll need a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, including Design for Excellence (DFX) methodologies, expertise in low to mid-volume manufacturing of intricate electro-acoustic devices, a deep knowledge of materials and their appropriate finishes, thermal management techniques, and the ability to design and implement specialized tooling and fixtures for precise manufacturing. You'll also be responsible for developing and implementing rigorous testing procedures to ensure product quality. You'll leverage your industry experience to provide technical project leadership and guidance. This includes performing physical and statistical analyses, reviewing design specifications to ensure that product requirements are clearly defined and met, analyzing acoustic performance and feedback data to inform design improvements for both mechanical and tooling components, and collaborating with the manufacturing team to translate design improvements into tangible benefits.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Design and refinement of complex parts, assemblies, and tooling using SolidWorks.
  • Use of analysis and simulation to optimize thermal and structural design solutions.
  • Verification and documentation of the designs through confidence testing and performance demonstration.
  • Leading technical projects by facilitating design reviews and successfully guiding them through a structured phase gate-process, ensuring timely transfer to our in-house manufacturing teams and adherence to quality standards.
  • Develop injection molded housings and acoustic lensing design and methodology for various transducers. Design tooling jigs and fixtures for repeatable results in manufacturing. Lamination tooling and stack assembly tooling to support current and new transducer array architectures.
  • Become a key resource in configuration management, bill of materials (BOM), and control of New Product Introduction (NPI) transducers and Sustaining projects using Oracle Agile PLM software and develop strategies for optimum implementation.
  • Tracking daily progress of samples/experiments and providing accurate updates and creating/maintaining a central spreadsheet. Producing reports and assessments of tooling and/or fixture related improvements to yields and results in production and/or prototype environments.
  • Improving the thermal efficiency of new and/or existing transducers.
  • Maintaining the lab efficiency, test equipment and supplies in an orderly and professional manner.
  • Responsible and accountable for carrying out the requirements of the company's quality management system.
  • Interact with members of the Ultrasound Systems engineering or other associated groups as necessary for transducer related issues.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • B.S. Mechanical engineering, M.S. or PhD in related engineering discipline preferred. 
  • 7-10 years of product development experience, with at least five years designing electro-mechanical devices or a similar type of FDA regulated medical device strongly preferred. 
  • Proven experience in leading technical projects using internal or external contract resources. 
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical tolerance analysis and Designed Experiment techniques. 
  • Expert know-how with SolidWorks, with surfacing experience of hand-held products preferred. 
  • Simulation experience using SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, Abaqus, or other software packages for thermal and structural/stress analysis. 
  • Experience integrating compact mechanical assemblies that include electronics and adhesive sealed injection molded enclosures preferred. 
  • Experience in thermal management of compact, highly integrated devices preferred.

  • Domestic and limited international travel may be required, < 10%. 

 

Salary and Benefits:

  • $97,000 - $140,000 depending on experience + variable bonus opportunity (Compensation will vary based on skills, experience and location; it is not typical to be hired at or above the top of the salary range).
