  • Overview



    The printhead development engineering group is responsible for the development printheads as well as printhead technologies for future products. The engineering activities which support these development projects include product design, simulation of printhead physics, experimentation to validate product performance, experimentation to validate numerical simulation methods and the research of new technologies.


    The Development Engineer II position is responsible for the design and continuous improvement of printheads manufactured using various micro device technologies including MEMS. This position is additionally responsible for the continuous improvement of Fujifilm Dimatix proprietary modeling software used for simulating the performance of piezo-acoustic ink jet printheads. This position will work closely with a senior research scientist to complete projects selected to improve simulation accuracy, speed and complexity.

    JOB COMPLEXITY: Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Networks with senior internal and external personnel in own area of expertise.

    SUPERVISION: Normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work, general instructions on new assignments.

    EXPERIENCE: Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience.




    • Utilize numerous modeling methods for the development and continuous improvement of new DOD inkjet jet designs;
    • Responsible for development of new designs and processes for the manufacturing of advanced DOD inkjet printer heads;
    • Work as a member of the printhead development engineering team to develop and evaluate new technologies and applications;
    • Responsible for continuous improvement of inkjet modeling software to resolve known weaknesses in our ability to simulate inkjet performance (i.e. drop formation, jet stability, cross-talk); and
    • Facilitate experimental test plans that can be performed to validate new jet designs and modeling enhancements.



    • Indirect supervision of print head test lab technicians, as needed to evaluate new jet designs or validate modeling methods.

    • Strong applied understanding of calculus, physics and numerical modeling methods
    • Advanced problem-solving skills utilizing science and engineering education to arrive at practical solutions
    • Familiarity with statistical methods
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to work individually as well as interact with vendors, customers, and other engineers or scientists
    • Working knowledge of Python, C/C++ and Visual Basic



    • Experience using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software to simulate inkjet physics, for example ANSYS and COMSOL
    • Knowledge of ink jet printing systems
    • Experience modeling electrical, fluidic, thermal, mechanical and acoustic circuits using transmission line modeling.
